Mia tugged at Jake’s sleeve, her voice tinged with impatience. “Come on! That roller-coaster ride is finally available, and I don’t want to waste my time on cheesy carnival games!”
Jake, however, had his attention drawn to a game booth with a sign that read “TF Darts.” An attractive lady in a magician’s costume waved at him from behind the counter. “Come try your luck, and you might just have your fate transformed! The grand prize sits at $100,000! May steady hands steer you to your goals or to a simpler life without riches…”
“Hold up, babe,” Jake said, grinning as he pulled Mia toward the booth. “This looks fun. I’ll play for you.”
Mia rolled her eyes. “Darts? Really? I’d rather be upside down on a ride than watch you miss a board.”
“Trust me,” he said, already handing a crumpled five-dollar bill to the magician. “I’m good at this. I’ll win you something!”
The magician tipped her hat with an amused smile, as if she knew something they didn’t. “For your girlfriend, you say? Very well, step right up, then. The rules are simple: land all five darts in the bullseye to win the grand prize! The colored balloons hide surprises—or, as I call them, consolation prizes that could change one’s fate.”
Jake was too excited about playing to pay attention to the magician’s words as he quickly took aim and began sailing the darts through the air.
None of them came close to hitting dead center where the dollar sign stood. He had racked up 69 points thus far and was finally on his fifth dart. Taking a deep breath, he attempted once more to hit a bullseye as he let loose the final dart, watching it drift right as it popped a pink balloon hiding a caricature of a monkey with a goofy grin clutching a banana.
“Hey, Mia! Look what I won!” quipped Jake pridefully as he looked back to get his girlfriend’s approval. But Mia simply folded her arms, feeling annoyed as she turned to look in the direction of the roller-coaster.
The magician’s amused smile widened, her dark eyes glinting with a knowing spark as she raised her arms in the direction of Mia and began casting a spell.
It didn’t take long before Mia noticed something was wrong as a strange warmth and itch bloomed across her skin. “Jake!” she cried out, her voice trembling, “I… I don’t feel right.” Her annoyance faded, replaced with confusion as she began scratching herself absent-mindedly. Mia looked down at her hands to see her nails lengthening into claws as brown fur crept across her arms and body. A long, prehensile appendage was already peeking out from the back of her tights.
Jake stood frozen, his face a mask of shock and disbelief. “Mia, stop! What are you doing?! Oh my God! You—you’re… becoming a monkey!”
“I-I can’t think straight… want to… eEEE-EEEEK!! AAH-AHHH!” shrieked Mia as she suddenly let loose a primal holler while stripping off her clothes. “It’s so hot… too much…” Her hands roamed her transformed body, tracing the fur, her claws grazing her skin as she squirmed. The carnival’s bustle spun on, oblivious to her unraveling, but Mia’s world shrank to the pulsing heat driving her wild.
The magician chuckled softly, finally fastening a collar around the monkey-girl’s neck and leading her toward Jake. “A monkey’s nature is wild and free. Go on dear, don’t be ashamed. This is your boyfriend’s prize to you. Enjoy your new life as a mischievous and playful animal. He’ll keep you as a pet… or plaything, I’m sure.”
